Description

Messier 78 is a dark diffuse reflection nebula about 1600 light years distant in the constellation Orion. With its whispy blue nebulosity and dark molecular clouds I have always found this to be an intriguing (even mysterious) night sky object. The last time imaged this target was back in Dec 2014 (see https://www.astrobin.com/143468/B/); I think this latest version is much improved.
Capture details: Skywatcher 200PDS telescope, QHY294C camera with Optolong UV-IR cut filter, Skywatcher NEQ6 tracking mount. Exposure time of just over 7 hours, captured across 10-12 Jan 2024 from Strathalbyn

Messier 78 doesn’t have a “common” name that I am aware of – what do you think it looks like?
